In His Own Words

About him

Hi there!

Well I'd like to think that I'm a tidy, kind, caring and honest sort of chap. I am vegetarian (aspirational vegan) and I care a lot about nature and my environmental footprint. I abhor horse racing, fishing, hunting and any other sports that involve hurting animals. I have a PhD in molecular biology. After a long spell working in the civil service in Defra, I now work in scientific consultancy in role related to food safety and the environment.

I like cultural activities such as watching classical music concerts or going to galleries, museums, the opera, the theatre, historical sites and so on. I play the violin in regular concerts with a couple of amateur orchestras as well as enjoying playing or watching folk music. I'm trying to relearn the piano.

I'm very much a outdoors person. I love gardening and growing my own fruits and vegetables and I had an allotment until a recent relocation. I also love hiking, skiing and bird/nature watching. I'm originally from Suffolk, but having mostly lived in Scotland and Yorkshire I've done lots of hillwalking including winter mountaineering with an ice axe and crampons and I've climbed over 80 Munros.

I enjoy cooking and DIY. My latest adventure is a woodworking evening class.

Here are some other things that might give you some idea about me and my interests: Archaeology, astronomy, atheism, badminton, Bake Off, baking (especially bread), bat detecting, cats, cinema, dinner parties, dystopian fiction, Father Ted, Formula 1, fossils, geology, gin, HiFi, home cinema, Infinite Monkey Cage, jigsaw puzzles, News Quiz, Philip Glass, philosophy, prog rock, psychology, Queen, Radio 4 comedies, real ale, remainer, seaside, single malt whisky, Six Nations, steam trains, synth-pop, Test Match Special, tropical fish keeping, wild flowers.

About his ideal match

I'm looking for a caring, honest, kind, vegetarian/vegan and non-smoking woman. Someone who would get as excited as me about gardening, watching wildlife, hiking up a hill, going ceilidh dancing or watching a classical music concert. I'm always happy to be introduced to your hobbies too of course.

I'm quite a romantic person, therefore I'm looking for someone who would like to snuggle on the sofa or share a back rub or a candle-lit bubble bath.

My dream is to have a small holding/eco grand design somewhere in the Yorkshire Dales or in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, especially in my favourite place, the Shetland Islands but I would be happy to share in your dreams too. I'm quite flexible on location as homeworking is available with my current job.
