In His Own Words

About him

Where would I like to be right now? Quite simply: at somewhere like the Barbican or Royal Festival Hall, listening to a performance of a Beethoven symphony - and in particular the Ninth, which is my all-time favourite piece of music. It is like an erupting volcano of musical emotions!

It's a bit of a paradox that I love music as I have no musical abilities at all and used to be forbidden from singing at school. Yet why should this be a problem? You don't have to be a painter to appreciate a Rubens or a Rembrandt, or an architect to appreciate King's College Chapel or St Paul's Cathedral (or to state that you think the Barbican is an ugly carbuncle!), so why should you have to be a musician to be able to appreciate Beethoven?

I'm also a great lover of G&S, in particular Iolanthe, The Mikado and HMS Pinafore.

So what about me as an individual? I'll skip through all the usual stuff fairly quickly: I haven't got much hair left, had to have a hearing aid fitted last year, work in the rail industry (and love it!), am a reasonable cook (well, I've been living on my cooking for the last 30 years so I must be doing something right!) and support Charlton Athletic (well, someone has to!).

What makes me tick? Apart from my love of good music, my other great passions in life are railways, walking, single malt whisky, history, travel and photography. I'm also a bit of a bookworm and usually have about two or three on the go. I like reading biographies and historical and technical non-fiction; I also like historical fiction and have recently read all the Shardlake novels by C J Sansom. If you've not come across the Shardlake stories, then I thoroughly recommend them!

I think the most important thing, though, is that I am not a conformist. My attitude to life is a little bit unconventional (in the nicest possible way!) and this can best be summed up by a former guv'nor of mine who, when I was leaving to take up another job, said of me that opinion was divided as to whether I was an institution or should be in one!

About his ideal match

I'm looking to meet someone who shares some of my interests but who also likes doing her own thing - I believe that for a relationship to thrive, people need their own space as well as time for sharing. Someone who's a good conversationalist and enjoys putting the world to rights, or discussing favourite books or films, over a few drinks, whether at the pub or on the sofa. Someone who enjoys a nice country walk followed by a pub lunch! Someone who's a bit unconventional and doesn't follow the herd. Someone who'd like to go to concerts, the cinema or theatre with me. Most importantly, though, someone who is happy for me to accept her as she is and who accepts me as I am.
