In His Own Words

About him

Now I might well be wide of the mark here (although I do hope not!), but I’d like to think that I’m a good-humoured, warm, open and honest person who’s not been too jaded by life’s many twists, turns, frustrations and upsets.

Perhaps it’s the things we like and hold dear that give the best hint of our true nature and essence. If that’s so then what would I include? Well, time with family and friends, engaging conversation, good food and conviviality, laughter, weekends away, ocean voyages, the theatre, concerts, exhibitions, literature, my long-suffering piano and violin, my graphic art, photography and videography, my garden, and, er, chocolate. Oh also, and by no means an afterthought, Handel, Bach and the many other enviably gifted weavers of minims, crotchets and quavers who touch me with their wonderfully evocative music.

Nature and the natural world continue to fascinate, surprise and enthral me, even in my own modest back garden. Betty and Bertie, my adopted blackbird couple, whose decidedly wobbly relationship has endured over the years despite the frequent bickering, have been a constant and welcome presence, often making me smile with their quirky ways and their readiness to engage with me. [Quick update: Bertie, bless him, seems to have done a runner, or worse (in a feet-pointing-to-the-sky sort of way) – I really hope I’m wrong.]

Now where was I? Oh yes, the things I like . . . well, lazy Sunday mornings, warmed almond croissants and freshly ground coffee also feature in my ongoing quest to remain sane, as do BBC Radio 3, the Daily Telegraph, an occasional shared treat of nicely chilled Sancerre, a ripsnorter of an Indian curry (thank goodness for Rennies, eh!), vanilla ice cream topped with raspberries and grated chocolate (yes, I know), and a squirrelled-away stash of something good (such as . . . er . . . chocolate) for those times when, well . . .

About his ideal match

Walking in the great outdoors is one of my passions (but not in a head-down, furrowed-brow, route-march kind of way you might be relieved to hear), so if the prospect of a relaxed, fair-weather ramble followed by a hearty pub lunch or afternoon tea appeals to you then we already have something in common. The New Forest, Milford on Sea, Hengistbury Head and the Purbecks are my favourite local haunts and it’d be wonderful if they mean as much to you as they do to me, but if they’re unfamiliar then perhaps you’d allow me the pleasure of introducing you to their many and varied delights. What a treat it’d be to visit your cherished places too, if that’s something you’d like to share with me.

A recent dance weekend in my home town of Bournemouth and the memory of what fun it was to whizz around the dance floor in my younger days have spurred me to trip the light fantastic again. Re-learning the steps after thirty-something years has been quite a challenge, but my patient dance-school teacher (thank you Jess!) and lots of practice in the kitchen have edged me nearer to swapping the kitchen floor for the dance floor and the hope of finding someone who might be willing to partner me from time to time. Whilst not exactly in the first flush of youth, I can still raise a good head of steam, thank goodness – once, that is, this ageing boiler has had a chance to warm up fully. (On second thoughts perhaps it’s best to scrub that bit about the ageing boiler, as I’m not sure it’s exactly helping my pitch.)

Getting to know each other later in life is undoubtedly as exciting as it was in our younger days, and I’m sure that with many mutual interests, enthusiasms and lots of fun to share we’d be well on the way to becoming good friends, and – with open minds and fortune smiling on us – perhaps more. I really do hope so.

Now, where on earth did I put that chocolate . . . ?
