In Her Own Words

About her

And I had a lot of accidents – repeatedly. I never knew why. But then, aged 59, I discovered why. And that led to a whole new WHY.

The why was dyspraxia, a life-long inherited neurological condition that affects balance, co-ordination, memory, and speech. I could have felt sorry for myself, but I didn’t. I was too delighted at finally being able to make sense of my life thus far. I was even more delighted when, in 2013, my neuroscience professor told me:

‘Whenever there’s a deficit in one part of the brain, there’ll be a compensating abundance in another.’

Bingo: my compensating abundance is my gift with words. I’ve been a writer all my life, and I’m currently developing into a talented public speaker.

Armed with the knowledge that we can rewire our brains, I decided in 2014 to see what I could do with my weirdly wired wits. So I embraced long-distance hiking. What more suitable activity could there be for a woman of a certain age with a history of back problems, bad balance, and no sense of direction? Bizarrely, walking as therapy worked. During the four years that followed, I walked over 5,000 kms, including over 2,000 in one go: from London to Santiago de Compostela on medieval pilgrim routes.

These days, I’m a happy, healthy hiker who can distinguish right from left, has a firm grip of gravity, and can make some sense of a map. Woo-hoo! As for the new WHY, I now use my gifts with words to help others understand that they can be more than they think – whatever their deficits.

Six things I couldn’t do without

1 Purple Pentel pen: magic marker of creativity

2 “Winnie-The-Pooh” books: a solace in childhood and beyond

3 Vivobarefoot hiking boots: taking me beyond my comfort zone and into adventure

4 Pana raw chocolate: healthy AND delicious – who knew?

5 Tigger soft toy: my companion in adventuring, and a reminder that my Eeyore days are over

6 Butterfly pendant: symbol of transformation, transcendence, pilgrimage, and joy

About her ideal match

My ideal match would share some of my interests, especially a love of the great outdoors, and would be kind, generous, and understanding of my introversion and creativity.

I like the intimacy that flows from being in rapport with someone who is sensitive enough to spend time in silence with me, loving enough to accept my quirkiness, confident enough to pursue his own interests without me and allow me to do the same, and romantic enough to express his feelings both verbally and physically. Hugs, holding hands and humour are all appreciated here. If you think you could be my soul and sole mate, please get in touch. If not, good luck elsewhere.
