In Her Own Words
About her
As is the case with many women, I have had a somewhat chequered career, focusing on distinct challenges at different stages of my life and turning my hand to a range of occupations and a variety of ventures.
I studied foreign languages at Durham University and after an array of temporary jobs or short-lived employment (including a brief foray into the BBC), I eventually took root in industry at a Blue Chip company, where I became a dedicated Business Analyst and Project Manager and was prized for my analytical (and, at times, linguistic) skills.
I left work to relocate and start a family, devoting most of my time and energy to raising two children (now 23 and 22). I separated from their father in April 2010 and was divorced a couple of years later. My son and daughter continue their studies at university and are, hopefully, finding their own way to success and happiness in life. It is now time to think about my own future once again.
I would not consider myself to be fluent in any foreign language at the present time but would expect to return to this interest in retirement, perhaps with some associated travel.
I believe myself to be an INFJ (Myers Briggs) personality type, which means that I live a lot in my head! As regards heart vs mind, I think they are, in fact, mysteriously intertwined.
I'm very interested in politics but my views are increasingly difficult to pigeonhole. I would describe myself as centre-left, definitely a Europhile and socially liberal. Yet I am more and more concerned about freedom of speech or rather the need to preserve it. Diversity of opinion is critical in a free society; variety is the spice of life.
About her ideal match
A potential partner would be someone who is sympathetic, gentle-mannered, reliable, kind and thoughtful but also, most importantly, someone who is intelligent, open-minded, interested in ideas and who enjoys discussing the issues of the day. Whilst having similar values is important, giving equal weight to them is clearly not. I am not looking for a clone!
I am likely to be attracted to someone with some musical tastes in common and an interest in culture. I am not a huge fan of team sports though recognise, increasingly, the importance of keeping fit and encouragement along these lines would be great! (I am currently doing Pilates and the Couch to 5K Podcast.)
I am looking for someone who may be accomplished but shows some humility; someone who realises that, what we don't know or yet understand, is (and always will be) far greater than what we do. I would like to be inspired by someone who enjoys a challenge, and believes, like me, that, as a species, we have huge strengths and are capable of great exploits, yet also ponders the complexity and frailty of the human condition.
I would value someone with a sense of curiosity, a respect for their environment, an interest in and empathy towards others, a thirst for self-knowledge and a passion for their own particular interests; someone to join me in contemplating not only the world around us but our inner selves; someone with whom to share old favourites and explore old haunts; most importantly, someone to accompany me on life's journey, enjoying the thrill of ideas, places and experiences, as yet unknown and undiscovered, delighting in joint endeavour and appreciating life anew.
