About him
I grew up in Malta and leafy Marlow-on-Thames and spent much of my youth outdoors in and around the woods and river.
At school I enjoyed art very much and had a fairly clear idea that I would use this skill in later life. I went to Art School at 16 and dabbled in various areas before being advised and encouraged to fall into Commercial/Graphic Design/Art.
In London I worked as a Graphic Designer for twenty or so years with short stints in Israel, Australia, Germany and America and Brighton where I had my own design practice.
I continued to sketch and paint landscapes and figures, mostly in pencil and watercolour whenever possible and when a design job in The West Country came up I left London for Bath and here was inspired to paint regularly.
I subsequently fell in love with oil painting and with the beauty of Bath’s architecture and rolling hills. I find that I am happy to immerse myself in the challenges capturing the light and scenery that face me. Being located near to Bath was perfect as I really hate driving so have plenty on my doorstep to paint. (I now live back in Marlow, Bucks). Sometimes I wish I could paint other places like Cornwall or Venice and have done from memory and photos though I guess all painters focus mainly on what is nearby with occasional excursions to new and sometimes foreign lands. I have been lucky enough to paint in the Himalayan mountains and Spain and at home from digital sketches of Cornwall and Italy, 2 of my favourite places in the world to visit.
Known as ‘en plein air’, I find I can only fully capture the atmosphere of a place if located directly on location although I have added fictional characters here and there at home if time and weather is not on my side.
I love to talk to people when painting and often get asked to give lessons which is great fun. I recently took some classes in the grounds of Prior Park College for The National Trust where I passed on a few ideas and techniques.
