About him
This is a revised profile as I have been ill for most of last year and did not reply to any contacts because I wouldn't be able to meet them.
I'm a retired widower, seeking companionship. I love to listen to music (mainly classical) and discuss books. I've been told I'm quite entertaining! I'm generally friendly and chatty but I don't suffer fools well. I have a grown up family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
I love classical music, especially opera. Generally, I don't think there's been any good music since about 1975 but there are a few exceptions. I'm not at all keen on sports but again there are a few exceptions.
I moved to Crete with my wife 30 years ago and taught English to Greek children until I retired. My wife of 40 odd years died 10 years ago. I recently moved back to England where the family can keep an eye on me and support for the elderly and infirm is much better organized than in Greece. Due to the mobility problem, I can't do all the things I used to do but have now bought an electric wheelchair which may help me get about more. When able, I hope to be able to visit museums, art galleries and old houses as I used to and, maybe further ahead, go on city breaks or river cruises.
I've written several books mainly about historical topics, Latest is a history of Crete and my new book, a history of the Greek Jews, is being edited at the moment. I am now researching and writing another book about immigration to the UK from the Indian subcontinent and the contribution made to Britain by the immigrants.
I relax reading and watching classic TV series and quiz shows. In the evening I enjoy a glass or two of whisky, preferably Irish but happy with Scotch.
I'm generally an optimist and regard life is for living. In spite of mobility problems, I look to the future and am hoping to travel a bit. I am a Christian but not particularly devout. I'd probably describe myself as a "Christian Agnostic."
I abhor racialism and take everyone as they are.

About his ideal match
I would like to meet up with someone in this area who is on the same wavelength as me. Ideally, the lady would be reasonably attractive but this is by no means essential. What would be absolutely essential is a sense of humour. I'm not looking for a sexual relationship but would not mind if one developed.
Since I gave up smoking 15 years ago, I would find a smoker difficult but, again, this is not a show stopper. I'm not really into sport or exercise so would not be interesting in someone who is. As noted above, I enjoy a drink, although not excessively, so a "fellow drinker" would be acceptable. I'm looking for companionship and not somebody to look after me.
