In His Own Words
About him
I’ve come to terms with who and what I am at this stage in life, and I’m politely but unapologetically comfortable in my own skin. So let’s see…
Gentle, funny, kind: generous both of time and in spirit. Unfailingly honest, loyal: determined to see the best in folk, but even so neither Labrador nor pushover. Hugely shy, invariably self-deprecating (except here, obvs!). Self-aware and congenitally incapable of taking myself seriously, with a caustic eye for the ridiculous, pretentious and unfair. Sense of humour dry (qv already?) bordering on arid.
Very bright, sharp, but do my best to wear that lightly, and in some contexts can be as dense or as daft as they come. I’ll certainly challenge you, tease you – but never, ever maliciously – and make you laugh, albeit not always when I intend to. No kind of party animal, but engaging and sociable if I can hear myself think. Happier nearer home, these days, yet still curious about and engaged with the wider world: so with the right incentive, never say never. Comfortable around things canine and feline: not always quite sure about small people, though, perhaps it depends?
Old school manners are ingrained (walk on outside, innit!) but brain and attitudes are far younger, more flexible than that might imply. Well-read, in more than one language. Professional-standard classical musician, but there’s far more than that on the playlist. Bonus is that I'm just as at home in DJ or tux as in overalls or walking gear. Red-blooded, for sure but not solely testosterone-powered. Body does creak a bit sometimes but generally still seems to be in working order.
Other likes? Wordplay, silly/cryptic humour: walking – beaches, moors. Owls. Cricket (as much for the minds it engages as the game itself). Old cars, trains (sorry). Good books, though not all good authors. Loads more, if and when.
And into Room 101? ‘Reality’ anything. ‘Sleb’ culture (mostly a contradiction in terms?). Rudeness, lies, intolerance. Farage and all who sail in him (whoops, segue). Misuse of apostrophe’s?
About his ideal match
If only I knew. My small (but eclectic!) significant back history offers little in the way of helpful guidance, but by now I’m sure I don’t have a particular type, physical or otherwise: it’ll be about how we interact, rather than how you happen to be packaged.
Any interest in the kinds of music that don’t come to an abrupt when someone trips over the mains lead would be an encouraging start. And playing with words for fun (ISIHAC etc) is almost instinctive for me, so you have been warned!
Bright. Not necessarily ‘educated’ bright, though: street-smart is just as attractive in a different way. But I’d hope we could share random, irrelevant or irreverent conversations, gently send each other up, share ideas, broaden horizons… that kind of reciprocal thing…all the time knowing absolutely that the other will have your back, of course.
Active? Perhaps not sporty to the exclusion of all else, but ‘twould be nice if (say) a decent long walk to a good pub, up a hill just because it’s there, or along a beach floated your boat (mix metaphors? Moi?).
Self-sufficient, too. Not all day, every day, but over the years I’ve come to realise that I do need the odd pause to stop my head from going ‘tilt’. So if you’re able to do your own stuff, let me do mine, and not feel threatened even if we can’t immediately share it: that’s great.
But that’s only what I know: please add to the mix!
I’ve nothing new to add about chemistry being the solution: it’s all been said before, and I don’t have a new slant to bring (nor, it seems, a halfway decent pun). So if my list-based, persistently parenthesis-infested and somewhat tongue in cheek attempt at a self-portrait hasn’t driven you to distraction, I hope you’ll pick up on a hook or two, take the plunge and say hello - after all, there’s no other way to find out. But if I’m not for you, then thanks for dropping by, reading this drivel to the end, and I hope you’ll soon find someone who is. Good luck out there...
